The banana tree gives us one of the most widely consumed fruits in the world. However, the multiple uses that this generous plant of the MUSA genus can have, after its short life cycle, are still little known. MUSA AZORES has been exploring these uses and it is on the basis of this experience that it is putting together the BeSIDES exhibition-installation. From plant to creation, we invite you to experience various “B-sides” of the BANANA tree, which add value and make you rethink its better-known side.
MUSA AZORES is an initiative created in 2022 with the goal of promoting the sustainable and socially inclusive use of the banana plant — genus Musa —, utilizing its bio-waste for the production of fiber, crafts, art & design, and training and leisure services. Also in 2022, MUSA AZORES launched the bilingual digital book “Viagem ao Centro da Bananeira” with the support of Mão em Mão, which was also published in print in 2023 with the support of PARES. In the same year, it created a Christmas showcase with Vaga and made baskets for the rooms of the Nine Dots Hotel. In 2024, MUSA AZORES participated in the cultural event Laranjeiras em Flor and conducted artistic residencies on Gran Canaria Island and in Ponta Delgada, with funding from Culture Moves Europe and RARA, respectively. It also participated in the Triggers program — Casa do Impacto, with Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
