Sandra Rocha

Sandra Rocha was born in the Azores, in Terceira, in 1974. She lives in Paris. Recently, she has been developing a more poetic and artistic approach on photography. Her images confront the viewer with watery universes populated by young people, singular animals and strange landscapes. They gravitate towards the absurd, the notion that there is no other meaning to the world beyond the one we give to it. If at first glance there is only beauty and harmony, her work is ultimately a denunciation of this lack of meaning, of the world’s amorality and injustice.

Sandra Rocha started her studies in photography in 1996, at Ar.Co. She was a photojournalist for the daily newspaper A Capital between 1999 and 2003. Also in 2003, she was the cofounder of Kameraphoto, a photographic collective where she developed dozens of solo and collective projects until 2011, the year she left the group.

She completed her studies in History of Art at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2008 she completed her post-graduate studies in Contemporary Art and attended the course Criação e Criatividade artística of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, where she studied under Timm Rautert, Lynne Cohen, Carol Squiers, Olivier Richon, David Campany, Horacio Fernández, Rosangela Rennó, and Sérgio Mah.

In her last projects, Sandra Rocha has often elected the book as a medium. She published the following photobooks and monographs: Dérive des Baigneuses (Filigranes 2017); La Vie Immédiate, (LOCO 2017);  Le Silence des Sirènes, (LOCO 2016); Anticyclone (self-edited, 2015); Há Metafísica Bastante em não Pensar em Nada (CML, 2009).

Her work is represented in several public collections, among which stand out: Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap), France; Le Fonds municipal d’art contemporain (FMAC), France; Colección de Arte de Cantabria, Spain; Colección de Arte de Andorra, Spain; Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo de Santander y Cantabria, Spain; Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT), Portugal; Novo Banco, Portugal; Casa Museu Fernando Pessoa, Portugal; Arquipélago, Instituto Açoriano de Cultura, Portugal; Centro de Artes Contemporâneas, Portugal; Museu de Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal.
