Arquipélago – Contemporary Arts Centre opens João Amado exhibition ‘Se podes olhar, vê. Se podes ver’ on October 23rd, 4pm.
Seeking to create proximity and develop a bond of greater intimacy between artworks and observer, the exhibition ‘If you can see, look. If you can look, notice.’ is an invitation to look more attentively and reflect on our way of being, cohabiting and interacting with the natural world. It is also a wakeup call to our disconnected and self-centred condition, calling us to take heed of our footprint and contribution to the undeniable advancement of a grave environmental crisis.
Divided into two lines featuring various scenarios, contexts, situations and dialogues, and based on a surreal or fantastical language, the set of works here aims to reveal a renewed way of being human: eschewing a desire for dominance in favour of a greater connection and involvement with the elements of nature. – João Amado
João Amado
Born in São Miguel (Azores), João Amado is a self-taught visual artist who uses the traditional collage technique to compose the visual and conceptual structure of his work. He approaches themes that explore the spirit and relationship of man with the world, focusing on a vision centred in the surreal to convey sensations of travel, bridges with the world of fantasy, and of a return to the natural and the primitive. He has participated in two international collage festivals, “Paste Up” (Mexico City) and “Collagistas” (Brussels), and was present in the inaugural exhibition of the VAGA space in Ponta Delgada.
