The exhibition Whether There Be Shine or Gloom, a title inspired by a poem by John Keats, reflects on a possible analogy between weather and our emotional and mental state, with the latter culminating in troubled days and realities.
Susana Aleixo Lopes was born in 1987 in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, Azores, where she currently lives and works. In 2007 she began a degree in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, finishing the course in 2012 with an Erasmus exchange at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland. Her work is developed around and focused in the area of sculpture and installation and encompasses a poetic language which delves into what contemporary society encourages us to keep hidden. She uses techniques of wood burning to create striking blacks and textured depths, using wood and other elements to create links between interior and exterior, organic and artificial, natural and industrial. Since 2010 she has participated in various regional, national and international group exhibitions and in various arts festivals, biennials, art competitions and artistic residencies. In 2022 she obtained an Artistic Creation Scholarship from the Azores Government. Her solo exhibitions include: ‘Beautiful (w)Inner Battle’, BrumAteliê, São Miguel, 2021; ‘Nos Queda El Horizonte’, Centro de Arte La Regenta, Las Palmas, 2020; ‘No One Can Tell’, Galeria Arco 8, São Miguel, 2018; ‘O Vazio Preenche-se’, Exhibition room of the FCT Nova, Almada, 2017 – 2018; ‘Por um Fio’, Galeria Pinho Dinis, Casa Municipal da Cultura de Coimbra, 2015; ‘A Mais’, Galeria Geraldes da Silva, Porto, 2012; ‘Intimate Caos’, Espaço privado, Porto, 2011. Her works form part of the collection of the EDA renováveis company (São Miguel), site-specifc projects (São Miguel; Lisbon; Porto), and private collections (São Miguel; Lisbon; Porto; Coimbra; Los Angeles, Bilbao, London, Argentina, France, Germany).
